The American Dream seems elusive to so many families facing a tough economic climate, that moving away to find better opportunities seems like the only answer. But is it really a solution to your monetary ills? There are many considerations that have to go into effect before you execute a relocation to another state either to search for a new job, or if you've already been offered an employment opportunity. Find out if it's really worth it to move for a job.
Where Are the Jobs?
The New York Times did an article regarding this same subject matter in 2010. They said the best tool to search which city has the most jobs is Indeed.com, which is a search engine that compiles the jobs data per city. They list the best and worst cities in order based on how many job opportunities there are versus the amount of people searching for jobs. As of today, the best city is San Jose, CA and the worst is Miami, FL.
No Relocation Expenses Paid
Employers are no longer providing relocation aid, says an article written this past summer posted by msnbc.com. The only employees that are still receiving any aid are high-level executives. Most people are unable to move because of the financial hit they will take on their underwater mortgages. Companies used to help employees sell their homes, but now the losses are so big that most companies are no longer able to help, according to the article.
Standard of Living
You have to consider your standard of living in the state where you've chosen to move. If you've moved from a state that has no income tax to a state where you'll be paying, that's going to severely impact your income. An article online at Forbes.com says that the simple cost of living calculators you'll find online may be misleading. There are many other factors to consider, like how long you're going to live, the amount of money you'll pay on housing and any retirement tools your employer has available. It may be more expensive to move away for a job, than to stay in your city and search.
